China is the largest agricultural country in the world. Agriculture serves as the foundation of its national economy, and rural economy is an important component of the national economy. In order to know precisely the scale and structure of the factors in China's agricultural production and to further comprehend the basic information about the rural economy and social development, so as to assist the formulation of the development strategy for the national economy and of the rural policies, the Chinese Government conducted the country's first general survey on agriculture in 1997.On January 1, 1997, more than 6 million certified pollsters carried out a comprehensive survey on China's 230 million rural households, about 800,000 administrative villages, 50,000 towns and townships and more than 20 million rural enterprises. The general survey on agriculture was conducted by directly investigating the surveyed and making registration on the spot by pollsters. The on-the-spot investigations of the country's first general survey on agriculture has started across the country, and the survey and the processing of data are expected to be completed at the end of 1998.
