China Stamps - 2001-26, Scott 3152-55 A Tale of Xu Xian and the White Snake---A Folk Story - Imprint Block of 4 - MNH, F-VF : Zheng Chenggong (1624---1662) was from the Shijing Village of Nan'an County in Fujian. During 1661 and 1662, leading a troop of 25,000 soldiers and several hundred warships, he started off from Xiamen, passed Penghu Islands and attacked Taiwan which had been occupied by Dutch colonialists. With assistance of the local people, and after several months of fierce fighting, the recovery of Taiwan, a treasured island of China, ended the 38-year colonial domination. The triumph not only formed a glorious page in Chinese history, but also added immortal chapter in the world anti-colonialist struggle. The commemoration of Zheng's recovery of Taiwan expressed the wish of the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait for the realization of early peaceful national reunification.
